This study attempts to trace the origins of the house form and examines the forces that shaped its built form to be accepted as a prototype. This study traces the development of the colonial residences from its beginnings in Old Delhi in 1803 to construction of the Imperial Capital at New Delhi. These residences in a way were true Anglo-Indian typology in domestic architecture, behaving like sponges, absorbing and thereby reflecting the overall influences on a society at a particular time
