Tunnel Installation "44 Seconds"- RIPTA (Rhode Island Public Transport Authority) runs a bus service to various parts of the city. On one of the routes there is about ½ a mile long tunnel that passes under the hill. This hill connects the North Main Street to Thayer Street, which have different urban qualities to them. Thayer street bus stop is nice and cheerful buzzing with lot of commercial activities and North Main bus stop is isolated by the cross roads and has a dingy feel to it.
A lot of times passengers are trying to get to the other side of the tunnel and anticipation and anxiety sometimes have a bearing on them. This installation attempts to connect the two ends by using audio, light and video. This intervention intends to play with the state of the passenger in transit and virtually teleports them to the other side of the tunnel while they wait at the bus stop. A button triggers the whole installation and the entire sequence is timed for 44 seconds. 44 seconds is the average time for the bus to cross the tunnel, this is the time that takes for one to connect to the other side of the tunnel.
